Thumping the Steno Tub to Court Reporting Glory

I get knocked down, but I get up again.  You’re never gonna keep me down.  I get knocked down, but I get up again.  You’re never gonna keep me down.

In 1998, Chumbawamba, the English alternative group. had a hit with their song TubThumping.  For those who only know them from Pop music, they were a One-Hit Wonder.  To their fans, they had been playing for 18 years when they had that hit, and they continued for another 14.  They broke up the group in 2012.

I get knocked down, but I get up again.  You’re never gonna keep me down.  I get knocked down, but I get up again.  You’re never gonna keep me down.

TubThumping is an anthem.   Chumbawamba were rascals.  They would change the lyrics to fit whatever political or social point they were trying to make.  But by itself, without modification, it’s a fine song to get you shaking your fist at the sky and shouting “I will not be defeated.”

I get knocked down, but I get up again.  You’re never gonna keep me down.  I get knocked down, but I get up again.  You’re never gonna keep me down.

If you know the song, that catchy chorus will stick with you for the rest of the day.  That’s the part that everybody remembers.  I think it is because all of get knocked down once in a while.  Luckily, bad news is rarely permanent.  Life goes on.

I get knocked down, but I get up again.  You’re never gonna keep me down.  I get knocked down, but I get up again.  You’re never gonna keep me down.

You won’t pass every test.  You won’t win every battle.  But you won’t lose every time either.  You will win your share.  And as far as I am concerned, you are a winner as long as you keep fighting the good fight.

With a very short segment of the song, Chumbawamba addresses what will happen when you win.

We’ll be singing.  When we’re winning.

We’ll be singing.

Go out there and kick some steno butt.  Kick it hard.  Kick it often.

And get your voice in shape for singing.
